The Double Coat Shampoo is formulated for double-coated dogs, like pomeranians, german shepherds, corgis and huskies. Dogs shed seasonally, and our double coat shampoo is specifically formulated to tackle shedding by loosening the undercoat. Double coats also require routine brushing as the fur tends to mat, knot and tangle; our double coat shampoo is formulated with jojoba seed oil to moisturize the coat, ease the brushing, and help tackle tangling.
As opposed to many de-shedding shampoos that have only that one purpose, our double coat shampoo is a 3-in-1 shampoo that also cleans, hydrates and deodorizes your pup. By tackling 3 different steps at once, it offers a time-saving efficient solution to pet parents, all while offering similar deshedding benefits.
The key for grooming a dog with a double coat is to make sure you wash them with a shampoo that is specifically formulated for their coat type (like our 3-in-1 double coat shampoo!), get down to the skin (don’t just pour shampoo on top of their fur) and properly scrub with your fingers to achieve a nice deep clean. You also need to dry them properly so their skin doesn’t stay moist, which could lead to problems. Make sure you always brush out their coat and remove any knots before wetting them, as water has a tightening effect on tangles.
They do! Different breeds and coat types require different shampoos, because their hair and skin doesn’t behave the same way or have the same needs. It’s the same thing for us humans, curly hair will have different needs than straight hair.
This is a tricky question as it really depends on your dog’s breed and sensitivity. Typically it’s recommended to wash double-coated dogs about 2-3 times a year, except if they get seriously dirty (hello spring time and mud pits!). For short-coated dogs, a maximum of once a month as they tend to have more sensitive skin. Fur curly-coated dogs, every 6-8 weeks with regular grooming is generally sufficient. If you like to bathe your dog more often, Earth Rated shampoos are formulated to condition the coat and to avoid drying out the skin.
If your dog is scared of baths, you’re definitely not alone! We recommend starting small, and introducing your dog to the bathtub or shower beforehand (with lots of treats!) so it’s less scary for them. When they’re comfortable, up the ante by turning the faucet on and keep making small steps while letting your dog get familiar with this new (and scary) situation. Always make sure the water is at the right temperature (not too hot or too cold to be uncomfortable), and give your dog something to focus on while you wash them (again, lots of high value treats!). Adding a mat or towel to the bottom of your bathtub can also help your dog feel more secure (they aren’t used to the slippery feeling) and less afraid.
All dogs are unique, depending on the length of their fur and how dirty they are (from I just rolled in the mud to I need a refresh). Start with a minimal amount of product on their paws, legs and torso, and work your way up based on how dirty your dog is and how large they are. You might want to use more than not enough here; you should get a good amount of foam when massaging into the coat.
Wet your dog and ensure the water penetrates through the fur to the skin. Apply shampoo from the back of the head down the body, toward the tail and don’t forget the legs and belly. Massage gently in circular motions, ensuring it reaches down to the skin, letting it sit for a few minutes. Avoid the eyes, ear canals and nose. Rinse thoroughly.
