The Curly Coat Shampoo is tailored for curly and wavy-coated dogs, like poodles, doodles, yorkies and cavaliers. Curly coats can become rough and bristly; the combination of corn, wheat and soy proteins in our curly coat shampoo help maintain the natural texture of your pup’s curls, while coconut oil and chamomile extract provide moisture to their skin and coat.
The key for grooming a dog with a curly coat is to make sure you wash them with a shampoo that is specifically formulated for their coat type (like our 3-in-1 curly coat shampoo!), get down to the skin (don’t just pour shampoo on top of their fur) and properly scrub with your fingers to achieve a deep clean. You also need to dry them properly so their skin doesn’t stay moist, which could lead to problems. Make sure you always brush out their coat and remove any knots before wetting them, as water has a tightening effect on tangles.
The most important thing you can do to maintain your dog’s curls is brush them regularly, especially before washing them or sending them to the groomer. Water has a tightening effect on tangles and knots, creating mats that are very difficult to get rid of other than with shaving. Using a detangling spray (like our refresh mist) regularly in-between washes can also make it easier to brush and remove knots. Finally, using a shampoo that is specifically formulated for curly coats will help strengthen and nourish your pup’s coat to revive their natural curls.
Our 3-in-1 shampoos are perfect after a messy adventure or for routine baths. You can use them after hikes, lake days, or playtime in the mud to thoroughly clean your pup’s coat, remove stubborn dirt, and eliminate odors while conditioning the skin and fur; or when it’s simply time to give your pup a good bath. You can also use our shampoos during heavy shedding periods, as they help manage shedding by loosening dead fur, leaving the coat smooth and easier to brush.
This is a tricky question as it really depends on your dog’s breed and sensitivity. Typically it’s recommended to wash double-coated dogs about 2-3 times a year, except if they get seriously dirty (hello spring time and mud pits!). For short-coated dogs, a maximum of once a month as they tend to have more sensitive skin. Fur curly-coated dogs, every 6-8 weeks with regular grooming is generally sufficient. If you like to bathe your dog more often, Earth Rated shampoos are formulated to condition the coat and to avoid drying out the skin.
If your dog is scared of baths, you’re definitely not alone! We recommend starting small, and introducing your dog to the bathtub or shower beforehand (with lots of treats!) so it’s less scary for them. When they’re comfortable, up the ante by turning the faucet on and keep making small steps while letting your dog get familiar with this new (and scary) situation. Always make sure the water is at the right temperature (not too hot or too cold to be uncomfortable), and give your dog something to focus on while you wash them (again, lots of high value treats!). Adding a mat or towel to the bottom of your bathtub can also help your dog feel more secure (they aren’t used to the slippery feeling) and less afraid.
Giving your dogs lots of positive reinforcement, for example with their favorite treats, and making the experience as easy and stress free as possible are typically things that will help calm your pup during grooming. Our 3-in-1 shampoos help shorten the time required for baths by removing some of the steps involved in the process (like using a separate conditioner), which contributes to making the experience less stressful for your dog.
All dogs are unique, depending on the length of their fur and how dirty they are (from I just rolled in the mud to I need a refresh). Start with a minimal amount of product on their paws, legs and torso, and work your way up based on how dirty your dog is and how large they are. You might want to use more than not enough here; you should get a good amount of foam when massaging into the coat.
Wet your dog and ensure the water penetrates through the fur to the skin. Apply shampoo from the back of the head down the body, toward the tail and don’t forget the legs and belly. Massage gently in circular motions, ensuring it reaches down to the skin, letting it sit for a few minutes. Avoid the eyes, ear canals and nose. Rinse thoroughly.
I’ve got some great news! Our 3-in-1 shampoos’ gentle formulation is hypoallergenic and free from harsh chemicals.
